Spend Time With Us
Our Summer Associate Program offers an exciting balance of substantive work, shadowing opportunities and social activities. The program is designed to expose each Summer Associate to the work ethic and character of Wyatt while affording the Firm an opportunity to gain valuable insight into those same attributes of a potential Associate.
We primarily hire second-year law students for our program, but do consider first-year applicants on a limited basis. We assess our 1L hiring needs in December. As a NALP member, we abide by their recruiting guidelines and procedures in accepting applications. To apply, please submit an online application and attach a cover letter and resume for review.
Summer Program Length
Our typical summer associate program is 10 to 12 weeks from mid-May to August. We encourage you to spend the entire summer with us as this time helps both you and the Firm determine if Wyatt is a good fit. For those who still wish to split their summer, we prefer that you spend at least six weeks with us during the first half of the summer.
Work Assignments
In response to feedback from summer associates over the years, we have developed a program that quickly integrates you into the Firm’s practice. This provides you with a significant level of exposure to a variety of areas in the practice of law. For this reason, our summer associates are not assigned to specific service areas. Instead, we attempt to help our summer associates gain experience in a variety of service areas and give them an opportunity to work with as many attorneys as possible. Should students express an exclusive interest in a specific practice area, then we make special efforts to help them receive the type of work that interests them the most.
Learning the Culture
You will have two mentors assigned to you during the summer program. Your mentors and the summer program planners will assist you in learning to balance your work. Additionally, you will get to know other Wyatt attorneys through various social activities ranging from baseball games, partner hosted dinner parties, a day at the races, to providing community service through Habitat for Humanity or Legal Aid. We also arrange for brown bag lunch sessions devoted to training and invite summer associates to attend all service team meetings. You will also be given opportunities to observe and participate in depositions, trials, oral arguments, client meetings, negotiations, and a variety of other events as they occur.
Evaluations
We evaluate your performance during the summer and provide feedback on your work based on input from the assigning attorney. Assigning attorneys are also asked to discuss with you the quality of your work as you complete your assignments.
Offers
Summer associates who do well produce outstanding legal work while also relating well to others at the Firm, handling responsibility, exhibiting a clear commitment to the practice of law and demonstrating a strong work ethic. These are important characteristics that we look for in those to whom offers are given. Our offers for full-time employment are generally extended sometime in September.
